Do you appreciate what you have enough?

I can't explain the backstory to this one, because in all honesty I can't remember. I was scrolling through my written pieces, trying to decide whether I should just write a new one, when I stumbled onto this. I remember writing this in a hurry for an assigned topic and never going back to it after. I could actually read my own poem as a reader and not a writer. I don't want to say to much, because the poem speaks for itself, but in reading this again, I was reminded of how often we take things for granted, whether it is health, talents, gifts, friends, family or even yourself. Let this be a reminder to take a breathe and appreciate everything you do have, instead of pointing out everything you don't.

Time to appreciate

You

My heart yearns for more

as my soul sinks through the floor

because time has run out

soon there’ll be no more playing about

When I revisit the past;

the exact time I knew it was love

our footprints embedded upon the trees

dirty, dark and narrative knees

telling the story of the sweet and innocent fun

Your first day at school;

like a sponge in the enveloping chair

soaking up the teacher's every word

until the bell indicated your accord

To see you among your friends

was the highlight of my day

you never knew that I watched you

how I love the way you play

It was your favorite part of school

you had more energy than I’d ever seen you with

breaking all society’s rules

defying all their trends

Because of you I know how to laugh

I know what love really means

You would rarely tell me the words

but to me your heart was displayed upon screens

spelling out one letter at a time

PS: I love you;

you will always be mine

Your sweetness and affection

has seeped into my soul

and filled up my heart

that you now fully hold

Dearest sister,

Your head may now be bear

but it shows your courage through despair

Your skin may be pale

but it reflects your endurance

your energy may be dwindling

but you’ve showed enough perseverance

It’s okay to let go

I won’t be mad if you’ve had enough

you’ve given me more than I ever thought

your love goes beyond where I know

My heart yearns for more

as my soul sinks through the floor

because time has run out;

there is no more playing about
